Gender-affirming care is healthcare that supports people whose gender identity differs from the sex they were assigned at birth.
For some trans, gender diverse and non-binary (TGDNB) people, this may include gender-affirming hormone therapy.
The goal is simple: to help your body feel more aligned with who you are, while supporting your health and wellbeing.

💊 What is hormone therapy?
Hormone therapy is tailored to your individual goals—there is no “one size fits all”. ✨
Depending on what you want to achieve, treatment may include:
- 🌸 Oestrogen to support feminising changes, sometimes alongside medication that lowers testosterone.
- 💪 Testosterone to support masculinising changes.
- 🎯 Lower or personalised doses if you want some, but not all, of the typical changes.
Everyone responds differently, and changes happen at different speeds. Your healthcare professional can help you understand what to expect.
🩺 What happens before starting?
Your GP will take time to understand you, your goals and your health.
You may discuss:
- 💬 Your gender identity, goals and expectations
- ❤️ Your physical and mental wellbeing
- 🧬 Fertility preservation options
- 🩸 Blood tests and other health checks
- ⚕️ Possible side effects and risks
- 🔄 What changes you can expect and when
- 🛡️ Sexual health and contraception
An informed consent approach means you are involved in decisions about your care and have the information you need to make choices that are right for you.
🌱 What changes can you expect?
Hormones can cause a range of physical and emotional changes.
🌸 Feminising hormones
Oestrogen may lead to changes such as:
- ✨ Softer skin
- 💗 Breast development
- 🔄 Changes in body fat distribution
- 💪 Reduced muscle mass
- 📉 Reduced libido or erectile function
Some changes can take months or even years, and results vary from person to person.
💪 Masculinising hormones
Testosterone may lead to:
- 🧔 Increased facial and body hair
- 🔊 A deeper voice
- 💪 Increased muscle mass
- 🔄 Changes in body fat distribution
- 🩸 Periods stopping
- ❤️ Increased libido
Some changes, particularly voice deepening, may be permanent.
🔎 Ongoing care matters
Starting hormones is just the beginning. Regular check-ups help make sure your treatment remains safe, effective and aligned with your goals. 🩺
Your GP may monitor:
- 🩸 Blood tests and hormone levels
- ❤️ Blood pressure and general health
- 🧠 Mental wellbeing
- 💊 Medication effects and side effects
Your treatment can be adjusted over time as your needs and goals change.
🌈 There is no “right” way to transition
Everyone’s gender journey is different. You don’t have to want every possible change, and you don’t have to follow the same pathway as someone else. 💜
Gender-affirming care is about supporting you to make informed choices about your body and your health.
